JimRoyal.com is built using standards-compliant XHTML and CSS and is served using Wordpress.

The design goal of this site is a clean, functional, and elegant presentation. I believe that many web sites are overdesigned in an effort to dazzle the audience, and I have always striven for simplicity. This site is a continuation of the original version of JimRoyal.com (a screenshot of which you can see here), which was online from 2001 to 2009. The old design and the current one both eschew graphics, and rely almost entirely on typographic design.

The sole font used on the site is Arial. I would have preferred to use Helvetica, but that’s not a safe option. The fact is that many fonts do not render as crisply and appealingly on Windows XP as they do on Mac OS X (see this screenshot for an example of what I mean). For that reason, I have substituted Arial, which is a close lookalike of Helvetica, and which renders similarly on both Windows and Mac. Arial is not a well-loved font, but I prefer to have a consistent presentation.
